Sobibor was a Nazi extermination camp in Poland, and some of the inmates of Sobibor were knitters; many were just teenagers. Their job was to sort through victims’ clothing, salvaging sweaters and other woolen garments to ravel and knit into socks, gloves, and sweaters for the camp guards.

This 1949 list of ways for women to make themselves more attractive to men, from Esquire’s Handbook for Hosts, is the most amusingly appalling memento from the yesteryear’s sexism since that Victorian list of don’ts for female cyclists.
The only sensible piece of advice is number 4.
